Lamentation for My Idols
Arms of flesh are rarely
barefaced swindlers.
Double-dealers gild quick,
eager hands in
films of fraud. They prey on
giddy hearts left
half ajar to unsought
indiscretion.
Judge if I am worse than
kings of Judah—
led by pleasant liars
making pledges
not to ask bold questions,
only give sweet
promises that all is
right in Zion.
Somehow, I have traded
truth for comfort,
union for dominion,
virtue for self.
Wail for me, Jehovah,
your lost daughter.
